The girlchild turns 8.

I kid you not.

It has been EIGHT WHOLE YEARS since this happened

Sometimes I forget how it felt - the yearning for a little person to call me "mommy".  And then, I meander back to my blog to look at the pics of just how little she was, and I remember all the anguish and impatience and desperation to have a child. Then I realise that all of those yearny feelings are gone, baby, gone.

How lucky am I?

Happy birthday, my little girly-snokkels. Mommy loves you SO very much!

Jesse-Lee turns 5

Today I woke up to kisses and cuddles from my little 5year-old and I breathed in the happiness oozing from her. I recalled our life before her and praised God for granting me this most precious person as a gift and a grace-grower. I watched the smiles, laughter and fun of our friends who came to celebrate with us. So grateful for such a blessed life!

Goodbye work. Hello holiday.

Today is my very last day of work for 2012.  I am having some serious trouble, trying to keep from breaking out in bootie shakes.

On Sunday we hit the road to all the fandamily in the Eastern Cape, for a rocking Christmas with my most favourite people in the whole world.  Sunday cannot come soon enough.  We are all ready for the trip - dvd player, snacks, catsitter, etc.

Here's wishing you all a fabulous festive season.  Remembering our Saviour and the reason He came.

...the post about our holiday and burgeoning bulges

Damn. Back at work today. The Hubsband and The Girlchild are at home, enjoying another two weeks of holidays while I have become a member of The Sucker Club, working during the festive season. BUT - these are the last few days at this sucky job.  I have  been appointed to a new job, in a new role, at a new company and I can't wait to begin!!!

We had a SPLENDID holiday with my hubby’s folks in Durban. Durbs never disappoints. We acted like real Vaalies – spent most days battling the wind on the beach, splish-splashing in the waves and rolling in the sand in a determined effort to get as much sand in as many places as possible. Ahem. Exhibit A below:

We arrived in Durban on the night of the 15th with my trousers hanging loosely from my hips and departed last night with plump muffin tops over the same trousers. Which just goes to show that CLEARLY such delicious indulgence cannot go unpunished. I will regain my moderately heffalump appearance in the course of time. Which is, of course, what New Years Resolutions are for.

What did you do this Festive Season?

Loving the Beach!

The last of 2009

I've been trying to think of something profound to blog about for my very last post for 2009. And I just can't seem to think of anything worth being profound about... Which just goes to show that I am indeed shallow on holiday. So I'll just say "Thank Heavens that 2009 is almost over!"
.
Most everyone has been saying the same thing all day today, funny enough. Everyone has had a rough year, apparently. So, the general consensus, locally, is that Twenty Ten is going to be totally-otally phenomenally waaaaaayyyy better than two thou and nine. Has to be for South Africans. What with the Fifa World Cup and all.
.
I, for one, am not a big fan of soccer, but I'm all for a good party. And lots of happy vibey people sing-songing in the streets, et cetera.
.
Which is funny, considering that we are usually the only people we know that don't actually go anywhere or do anything for New Years Eve.
.
(Insert sound of crickets chirping.)
(Do crickets chirp?)
(Mmm... suddenly not too certain about that...)
.
Anyhoo. I digress.
.
In true Hillbilly Form, we have spent the day partying in anticipation of a grand night. At home. Doing nothing.
.
And that's exactly the way I like it. I might be a night owl, but I like to spend my night perched at the computer lurking around my fave people's blogs, and facebooking until the cows come home. In peace and quiet. While Jesse sleeps. And then, as the grando finalé-o to my night at home, I watch either Dinner For One or a repeat of The Royal Variety Show. So that I can ogle the Queen and her gorgeous grandson.
.
But, I always, always, stay up until 12:00. Otherwise it just wouldn't be New Years.
.
And that, my dear bloggity friends, is my oh-so-not profound conclusion to an oh-so-exciting year. May Twenty Ten be an awesome one for you and yours. And me and mine.

See you in the New Year!

It's all about the prezzies, isn't it?

So much fun in Aunty Di's house!

Little Jorja Mae (Jesse's cousin) also loved her prezzie from Aunty Di!

Merry Christmas!

We would have been in Port Elizabeth this December holiday. Plans changed somewhat when my sister and her hubby decided to buy my parents tickets to spend Christmas with them down under. And leave us behind.
.
Not that I'm bitter or anthing.
.
So, this year we're with Dear Hubsband's family again. And the funny thing is - I don't know where I prefer to be... with my family or with his! Let's face it. Very few people can say they LOVE their inlaws. I, on the other hand, LURVE mine.
.
You might be tempted to think that I'm laying this on a bit thick, because yes, they read my blog. (Hello Mom! Hello Nonks!) And you might be right wrong right...
.
But even our friends LOVE my inlaws. And you can ask them if you don't believe me. Our friend Dewald (who absconded South Africa to go and live in North Carolina! Deserter!) even writes my mom-in-law letters. But not us.
.
Not that I'm bitter or anything.
.
Anyhoo.
.
What I was supposed to be blogging about today was that I'm missing my Down Under'ers terribly today. They are eleven hours ahead of us, which makes it almost nine o' clock on Christmas Eve. My family don't do the open-prezzies-on-Christmas-Eve thing. They do the go-to-bed-early-so-that-the-night-passes-quickly-and-we-can-wake-up-to-christmas-morning-sooner thing. So at least I'm not ALREADY missing out on special family time... they're simply too far away for my liking.
.
Merry trissmiss to my Down Under'ers. I miss you all terribly.
.
And a WONDERFUL Christmas to all my blogging buddies out there!
.
Thank you, Jesus, for laying aside Your divinity and coming to our little planet to be born as a little guy in a feeding trough in a stable on the outskirts of Bethlehem, to a little girl who was scoffed at for being knocked up when she wasn't even married and a faithful young man who was ridiculed for standing by her. You are so much more than we deserve and we are so indebted to You!

P.S. Ms J, I promise I'll post some pics soon ok?

My Christmases are so different now!

We're in Durban again, holidaying with the outlaws inlaws. Which means that I have
(a) Internet access for the next three(ish) weeks! Yeeee haaaaaaa! So happy I am!
(b) Very willing suckers for punishment grandparents itching to look after Jesse so that I can have three minutes to myself! Yeeee haaaaaaa! So happy I am!
(c) Malls, malls and more malls nearby! Yeeee haaaaaaa! So happy I am!
(d) Unlimited coffee on tap! Yeeee haaaaaaa! So happy I am!
.
Hasn't this year just flown by sooooo fast? Remembering a year ago, my little girl's very first Christmas - she was still so tiny - not even crawling yet. And now, barely a year later, she is an inquisitive marauding monster! A lovable inquisitive marauding monster. But STILL an inquisitive marauding monster. Very little is beyond her reach now. Especially since she's figured out how to move the furniture and create steps to climb up to where she wants to be. Can somebody say "Lord have mercy"?
.
Gone are my days of sitting quietly beside her while she plays.
.
No siree.
.
Now,
I barely get to take a few deep unfit breaths before running to catch up with her before she plunders the next "untouchable". Leave alone inspect the state of my grey rooted hair!
.
Fun fun fun.
.
I cannot comprehend how vastly empty my life would be right now, if it weren't for this little girl. How I just totally adore her! (And yes, you can remind me of that when she's throwing a a very loud, very violent tantrum in the aisles of the Pavillion in the middle of a bunch of impatient last-minute-Christmas-shopping grinches. Please. Not for the feint-hearted, these tantrums!)
.
Somebody told me a few years ago that my life would never be the same when Jesus would give me children. How right they were! I wouldn't trade my NOW for my THEN, for anything on this planet! Even when I take stock of my empty wallet, grey hairs and aching bones. It's worth every second.
.
How blessed am I?

My beautiful babe

The beauty of this daughter of mine just blows me away some days. Recently Robin and I spent the weekend

at a resort on the KwaZulu Natal coast, called Salt Rock. What a spectacularly beautiful place it is! I took a few pics of my two fabe people on the planet, and thought I'd share them with you. (I am still without internet at home... can you believe it????? Me neither!)

Too many goodbyes...

We had a surprise visit from two of our best friends, Jair and Hanlie, and their gorgeous offspring, Isabella and Joshua, yesterday! They have just packed up their home in Maputo (Mozambique), and are in the process of moving to Bangkok (Thailand) where Jair will be working as a missionary for ADRA (Adventist Disaster Relief Agency).
.
They slept the night and just left on their way to Durban a few minutes ago.
.
What a bittersweet visit! SO lovely to spend time together again, to laugh and reminisce and wish we (our friendship circle) all lived nearer to each other, instead of scattered across the globe… Aurette and Andrew with their little Ethan now in New Zealand; Dewald and Chantell with little Eli and baby-to-be in North Carolina, Robin and I with Jesse stuck in Africa, here in the Hillbilly South African Bush… and Justify Fullnow Jair and Hanlie moving to Bangkok. As if Maputo wasn’t far away enough.
.
Baskets.
.
This planet of ours is simply too big for my liking.
.
Would that Jesus would come already, so that we could all go HOME to Heaven, where there will be no more separation…

Party Planning - it aint for Sissies!

It's Jesse-Lee's first birthday next week!!! I know! Can you see the grey hairs on my head? Where has the time gone?  It feels like we got her just yesterday!
.
I have been planning her party since March.
.
And they all say I'm a procrastinator!
.
Ha!
.
It's happening this Sunday. Hence the lack of blog posts the last few weeks. And the increased need for caffeine kicks. I sent out the invites in March (pic on left - or click here to see it bigger in another screen), then a reminder in April, and just recently another reminder and a PLEASE R.S.V.P. note!  And you would think, after all this correspondence, people wouldn't be asking questions like "When is the party again?"... I'm just saying.
.
But dang, it would seem my exuberance and over-enthusiasm has landed me in poop street.  Because now we're expecting about FORTY DEFINITE PEOPLE!!! DEFINITE yes'es.  My shattered nerves!  Some are driving from as far afield as Johannesburg and Durban.  And then there are about 25 people giving "maybe's" as replies, because they want to come but it depends on this or that. And those numbers aren't including the kiddies!!!  yikes!
.
But, I have all my plans in place.

Jumping castle booked?
Check!

Birthday cake ordered?
Check!

Caterer confirmed?
Check!

Tables and Chairs ordered?
Check!

Crockery Hired?
Check!

Table Cloths and Decor sorted?
Check!

Games for kids?
Check!

Snack Packs for kids to take home?
Almost done

Signboards for the road to the farm?
Check!

Sanity still in place?
Debatable.

I'll post pics afterwards.  At this rate I don't know if I'm going to be able to post again before next week.  Might need a few references for good shrinks after this lot.

Oh, and if this party-planning thingy-me-bob isn't enough to make me looney, we're also doing bathroom renovations this week.

Yeah.  Somebody shoot me now, please.
All I can say is:  Party-planning aint for Sissies.

Just quickly checking in from my cellphone to let you know that we had a massive storm here at the Hillbilly Dump, and my office leaked and killed my internet. Fun fun fun.

Want to wish you all a wonderful Easter weekend! May it be filled with all things chocolate Easterish. Remember our Saviour this weekend ok! After all, that's what Easter is all about, isn't it? And if chocolate aids you in contemplating Him, then lawaai marai! My mom arrives tomorrow for three weeks! Ok, could anything possibly be better that that??? Chocolate AND my Marmeeeee!!! Didn't think so. Love all you loonies out there. Happy Easter! Chat again soon, hopefully.

Happy happy

Yay! A new year, a new time to spend chasing chickens out the house marvelling at God's creation and especially at my banana-pudding and her delicious dimpled cheeks! Here's wishing you all a WONDERFUL year, filled with all of those naughty things that will make you fat. If this year marks another year that you've been ttc, I pray this year holds the fruition of your dreams! Hold on. Keep trying. Don't give up yet!
.
As for me, this is going to be my "Happy Year". Last year, at the start of the year I decided that I would be happy even if it totally killed me. And just look how happy 2008 turned out for me. Not that deciding to be happy landed me sugar booger, but at least I was semi-happy along the way. And seriously, how bad can being happy really be?
.
So, a marvelously HAPPY 2009 to all of my loony lurkers out there!
Yours in Hillbilliness
Char and her brood
.
P.S. I've been trying to post this since the 31st of December. Error schmerror.

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

You know you're loved when...

...you ask to speak to your nephew (who has just moved to Mars New Zealand and therefore doesn't get smooches from his favourite aunty very often...) and he says "Hello Aunty Char! I am busy catching a spider, a live one, so please just leave me alone for a little bit ok? Love you!" (CLEARLY!) "Bye!"

Yup, I think it's safe to assume I've dropped a bit down his Favourite People List. When someone would rather chase a spider than chat to you, there's your sign.

My christmas present budget just got a bit bigger. Nothing says "I LOVE YOU AUNTY CHAR!" quite like a newly bribed nephew who just got the gift of his dreams. Yeah. I'm scaly that way.

More weekend pics

We took Jess to our favourite coffee shop in Durban. To, you know, initiate her have coffee. In these pics are Robin's uncle Juri and his aunty Di with lil Jess. And then one of my mom with her favourite granddaughter.

Believe it or not - MORE showers of blessing!

Hold onto your seat folks. Robin and I drove down to Durban today (hence the no blogging for a few days - hectic preparations for meetings, painting the baby room, working inbetween paint sessions, more baby room preparations, and did I mention painting?...) and guess what happened tonight? ANOTHER Baby Shower! It's like a wonderful dream that I just don't want to wake up from!

And being a bit of a freebie whore, I was in "present heaven" tonight, unwrapping gift after gift after precious gift for our baby(ies).

What's that I just said? BabIES? Woot woot! Yes, babies. It looks like we might be getting the little boy after all. And probably a whole lot sooner than we thought too. The mom (oh, my heart just breaks for her!) has requested a week to just gather all her ducks and get them into a row, and then we shall start proceedings for the adoption. OH MY WORD! I'm going to be a Mom to TWO CHILLENS! Robin and I are totally over the moon. He tells me I'm the cow that jumped over the moon. You know - Hey Diddle Diddle, the cat and the fiddle?... Yup, that one. What. Eh. Va. I'm so going to be a Mommy soon! Yay!

Bring it on.

So, I thought I'd share a few pics of tonight with you guys. I didn't even bother doing a tally of all the gorgeous gifts we got tonight. We got TONS of gorgeous thingies for the baby(ies). Loooooots of pink. We're going to have to use all the vouchers and dosh we got to stock up on little boy clothes (especially from 3-6 months and older, because he's 2 months old right now). Our vet (we're quite good friends with him after all our pet palavas) and one of his office ladies named Dee, got us a whole bakkieload of boy things! And I mean a WHOLE bakkieload. They even bought us 120 nappies. And they're getting us a baby-bath, and another pram and and and...! I mean??? What planet is this that we're living on that people are SO generous? I keep telling you guys how totally bowled away we are by the generosity of people, but until you could see all the things we've been given, there's no way you could fathom how humble it's made me feel. Wow. God really does have a thousand ways of providing for us of which we know nothing.

Now for some pics. First, some pics of the Baby Shower in Dundee this week ... and then some pics of the Baby Shower tonight here in Durbs. I'll put one or two pics here too, but click on the links if you want to see more.

Tomorrow morning early, we have doctors appointments with Lindsay (and Victor will come along too) for a standard pre-natal checkup. Afterwards we're taking them out for tea somewhere nice, then heading back home to the semi-newly-painted Hillbilly Dump. (And then I'll post some pics of the nursery! yay!)

Seriously, could life get any better than this?

Showers of Blessing!

And all along I’ve really secretly thought I was quite a sharp bird. But clearly, I'm not as sharp as I thought. Which totally burst my I-Think-I'm-Pretty-Darn-Nifty bubble. But not without reward, I'll tell you that much!

Guess what happened last night? I've got to hand it to my friends, they're really quite a lot sneakier than I ever thought possible. They planned a whole big Baby Shower bash for me!!! And here's the most amazing part: they did it all without me ever getting a whiff of what was up! Now that’s what I call sneeeeeaaaaaky! (But you have to say it with the Jim Carrey "mask" accent, and then it's a total compliment in my vocab.) Yeah, sneeeeeaaaaky buggers! Pulled the wool right over my eyes.

On Monday evening, Cornia (the friend at who’s house the bash was held) invited me over to do some beadwork with her last night “for Mother’s Day gifts for the ladies at church.” Never one to turn down an opportunity to steal some other people’s crafty goodies do some fun arty fartsy things with my friends, I jumped at the opportunity. When I walked into her house I almost died of fright! Her entire lounge was full to the brim with church friends (ladies) and everyone starting blowing those funny squeaky things that make the sound of a duck in labour, and my heart just went and stopped on the spot! I was so totally caught off-guard! I don’t think I stopped smiling the whole night. I was so NOT expecting a party, leave alone a Baby Shower. I never thought I’d ever get to experience the joy of opening gifts for my baby!

Robin’s in for some competition by the way. Right now, she’s mine mine mine.

Almost nobody had heard about the little boy that we might be adopting, yet, (not many of us hillbillies have access to internet, so I have more friends in the computer who read my blog, than real live friends in real life who read my blog. Thus, they never knew of the developments with our Maybe Baby little Boy! We got so many beautiful gifts. Gorgeous, cuddly, fluffy, fun, practical, beautiful PINK gifts! Haha.

I don’t mind though. I wonder if he will mind if we dress him in pink? Just kidding. Then, again, pink is the new black, right? Then again, who’s going to go and dress their little baby in black? Oh well, there goes that theory then.

I’ll be showing you all some photos as soon as all my friends have emailed me the pics from their cameras.

In the meantime, here’s the list of all the things we were given! (last night and before, from friends and family):-

How spoilt are we? I am SO grateful for the generosity of our family and friends! There is no way on this little planet, that Robin and I ever have ever bought all of this ourselves. God knows a thousand ways of providing for us, of which we know nothing! I should have learnt to trust Him sooner! I am just SO amazed. I can't wait to post pics of the awesome party that my friends threw for me. It was SO much fun. I am so overwhelmed. (And you should believe me, otherwise I'm going to need to keep saying "SOOOO" over and over again! haha! As if I haven't said it enough in this paragraph. My vocab stinks when I'm happy. Hehe!)

But this post wouldn't be complete without me thanking two very special people, who made my surprise Baby Shower Bash so absolutely awesome! Lani and Cornia, I love you guys so much. (See, there I go with the "so's" again!) Thank you, thank you, thank you for spoiling me with the most beautiful Baby Shower Bash I've ever been to! I noticed all the details: from the exquisite chiffon ribbons; to the 'baby' glitter on the tables; to the handprints with all handwritten notes of love on them from everyone who attended; the baby photographs of everyone who came; the little Cinderella coach beside the cupcakes; even the handmade invitations you sent out, and thinking to set one aside for me too!; the time it took for everyone to get all dressed up as little girls at a party; the plates and plates of eats; the handmade decorations with teddies, and little nappies, dummies and ribbons. I noticed all of it, and especially the love that prompted you to do it all. Just for me. What did I ever do to deserve such amazing friends? Surely God has blessed me beyond measure. Thank you so much (you sneaky buggers)!

Of gifts and horses

Me thinks you guys have BRILLIANT IDEAS! An online gift registry! What a nifty idea! OK, so I did a google search for any local companies that do gift registries for babies... I found one called e-dreams. If any of you know of any other companies that deliver within South Africa, give a shout. I don't know this company at all, so who knows? In the meantime, here's a gift registry for those of you who really want to buy me something. Who am I to stop you guys? Really! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth and all of that. Not that I'm calling you guys horses! Nope! Not me... 'specially not when y'all are buying me pressies!!! Yay! Oh, by the way, if they ask you for a recipient address, use this one:-
PO Box 347
Dundee
3000
South Africa
Yay! Fun fun fun! Oh, and if you're wondering about the exchange rate, you could click here and the currency converter will tell you what value of your currency you're spending. Type the cost of the item in the block on the left, then select "South Africa Rand" from the drop-down menu in the "From This Currency" block, and then choose your currency in the right hand side and it will tell you the value in your money. Very clever little website that.
.
As you can see, our money's not worth much on the rest of the planet... But yay! Pressies! It's no wonder I love you guys. You have such clever ideas! (And now that I've shamelessly sucked right up to you guys, let me go and do something more useful with my time. Like, for example, refolding all the nifty little things we bought for baby today. And ooh and ahh some more. How happy am I right now?)
